Leon and the Celtics Start Where They Left Off

It took a while for the Boston Celtics to get things going after their emotional ring ceremony. Well what it took was Leon Powe stepping on the floor for his 2008-2009 regular season debut. Leon came in and gave an immediate spark to a sluggish Celtics team. Powe started his season out with a nice 3 point play then a baby hook to follow, after that the Celtics turned back into the team from last year.

Leon showed everyone what he could do with a little playing time. Give Powe 20+ minutes each game off the bench and I'm saying he's in the running for 6th man of the year award. Powe has never recieved consistant playing time in his career, with the confidence of his coach and team behind him he will become the dangerous player some of us have been waiting for him to be.

The two highlights of the night for the Celtics both came from Powe. First Leon had a ridiculous dunk over Delonte West that made him the top play of the day on ESPN. Then to finish the game Leon caught a Paul Pierce pass and finished it with a dunk on Anderson Varejao.

Overall Leon finished with 13 points and 2 rebounds. Not a bad season debut for Powe, I'm expecting more of this to come. Great game Celtics, and great game Leon!

Leon Continues to Show up In Preseason

Leon Powe keeps showing improvement in every game he plays. I know it's just preseason but he is becoming more confident with every shot and every defensive stop. In tonight's 90-86 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, Leon scored another team high 17 points including a game saving block in the final seconds. Even though it is preseason, making a big play at the end of the game is something that builds your confidence for the next time your in the situation.

Leon's building quite an impressive resume for end of the game plays. At this point I don't know if I'd rather have Larry Bird or Leon Powe at the end of the game :-)

Leon can spark this team on any given night and I think the Celtics know that now. I expect Leon to be the first guy off the bench this season and to see plenty of minutes.

Leon Starts Where He Left Off

(AP Photo/Elise Amendola)

The preseason has started as we all know and Leon Powe has started where he has left off from last season. The first game against the Sixers Leon lead the Celtics with with 12 points and in the most recent game against the Cavaliers Leon scored 8 points including the game winning free throws with 13 seconds left. I assume this is a confidence booster to Leon knowing he can perform with some pressure on him.

Leon looks solid and I expect only an improvement from last season and more playing time. Glen Davis has not looked so great in the first two games and hasn't had the production Leon has during his time on the floor. So I don't see Rivers giving Big Baby more minutes than Leon this year.

I like many other Celtics fans are impressed with Bill Walker and Patrick O'Bryant. Both these guys look like they can do a great job coming off the bench filling in for last years back ups, PJ Brown and James Posey. Everyone seems to be meshing really well and the young guys are looking very good.

I'm feeling optomistic about this Celtics team. Even more so than I was last year. I don't see age catching up to this team. But we shall see, it's a long season.
